Tips for Having a Great Vacation in the New River Gorge
Planning a trip to the New River Gorge? You are in for an unforgettable experience with something for everyone! From jaw-dropping views and adrenaline-pumping adventures to quiet trails and cozy campfires, this place truly has it all. To help you make the most of your time here, we’ve put together some of our favorite tips for a smooth, fun, and relaxing getaway.
- Book Your Lodging Early
The New River Gorge has become a popular destination (largely in part to the National Park status and it), and places fill up fast—especially in spring and fall. Whether you’re looking for a rustic cabin, a cool glamping spot, or a unique stay like our Aviator’s Lounge, it’s best to book ahead so you don’t miss out on the perfect place to rest your head.
- Plan Your Adventures—but Leave Room for Spontaneity
There’s a lot to see and do, from whitewater rafting and hiking to biplane rides and mountain biking. Make a short list of your must-dos, but don’t overbook yourself. Some activities require appointments, so it’s a good idea to inquire before your trip. Prioritize which attractions interest you the most. But remember, some of the best moments in the Gorge happen when you stumble across a hidden trail, a cool local shop, a biplane, or a killer sunset view.
- Dress for the Elements
The weather in the Gorge can be a bit unpredictable depending on the season. In the Spring and Fall, expect all four seasons in a single day, especially if you’re out all day. Bring layers, pack a rain jacket just in case, and wear sturdy shoes—whether you’re hiking the Kaymoor Steps or strolling Long Point or Endless Wall Trail, your feet will thank you.
- Support Local
Fayetteville and surrounding towns are full of charming local businesses. Grab lunch from The Takeout, pick up a souvenir from WaterStone Outdoors, grab a fresh cup of coffee from RangeFinder or breakfast from Cathedral Cafe, go to the Fayetteville or Canyon Rim Visitor Centers, or ask a shop owner for their favorite trail or swimming hole. You’ll get way better recommendations than anything on Google!
- Don’t Skip the Scenic Drives
The Gorge is gorge-ous!! While there’s plenty to do on foot or paddle, don’t forget the beauty you can see just from your car window. Route 82, Fayette Station Road, Routes 16 to 60 Gauley Bridge, and the drive out to Summersville Lake are full of photo-worthy moments—and make great pit stops for snacks or a lakeside picnic.
- Try Something New
Whether it’s ziplining through the trees, kayaking a hidden cove, or taking off in a vintage WWII biplane, the Gorge is the perfect place to push your boundaries (safely, of course). You might surprise yourself—and make memories you’ll be talking about for years.
- Unplug (At Least a Little)
We know it’s tempting to post every moment on Instagram (and trust us, it’s all very post-worthy), but don’t forget to soak it in, too. Put the phone down, take a deep breath, build a fire in the evening, and just enjoy being surrounded by wild beauty.
